Matty Cash comments on his Aston Villa future after summer transfer window speculation

Defender Matty Cash has stressed his commitment to Aston Villa after a summer filled with speculation over his future. The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a return to his previous club Nottingham Forest, but no move materialised as Villa navigated a transfer window shaped by financial restrictions.

Unai Emery’s side, who narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification last season, were forced to offload homegrown star Jacob Ramsey to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Matty Cash was another one of several senior players rumoured to be heading for the exit door.

But despite the uncertainty, the Poland international has made clear he sees his long-term future at Villa Park.

Cash's love for the club

Whilst away on international duty, Cash was speaking to the PA Agency on his future and quoted the following:

“I’ve loved my time at Villa for the last five years, and hopefully I can have many years still at the club.”
“I love the club, I’m really settled in Birmingham.
“If you’ve got clubs coming in for you, it’s obviously a good sign. But I love playing for Villa. I love playing under Unai and as I said, hopefully for many years I can keep doing that.”

PSR frustrations from within the squad

Cash, who marked the international break with a stunning strike for Poland last night against the Netherlands, admitted the PSR situation has been a source of frustration. Yet he believes the tight-knit nature of the dressing room can help Villa weather challenges both on and off the pitch.

“The PSR and stuff, it’s frustrating because obviously the owners have got money that they want to spend and do what’s best for the club, and obviously we’ve got limits and we can’t do it,” he explained. “But obviously we’ve had good success with the squad that we’ve got now. As players, you can’t really get too drawn into it. You just have to focus on your job.
“We’re the ones that are out there on the pitch. Our jobs as players, we get paid to perform on the pitch, and that’s all we can do. We’ve got a good, strong group. We’re very close together as a team. So it’s important to have that.
“We’ve done well because I think the squad has togetherness and in tough times like this obviously you need to stick together. You need to be a group and a squad, and I think we’ve done that. The rules are the rules, and you have to just get on with it and try and do well.”

Europa League sights

Villa head into the new campaign with the Europa League in their sights, under a manager who has lifted the trophy a record four times. Cash insists there is confidence within the squad that Emery’s European pedigree can inspire another strong continental run.

“We want to do well in Europe again this year,” Cash added. “We have got an experienced manager, who’s obviously won it many times. I think it’s always an aim. When you’re in a European competition, you want to try and do as well as you can. And obviously, if you get to the later stages, you want to try and win it.”

After a summer of transfer speculation and financial uncertainty at Aston Villa, Matty Cash has underlined his loyalty to the club.

Some fans were open to the idea of the Poland international departing this summer after a dip in form, but Cash's recent comments show his commitment to Aston Villa and he is motivated by the togetherness within the squad. For another season, Cash looks set to play a big role at right back in Villa’s push for domestic and European success this season.

Deadline Day delivered fireworks for Aston Villa as the club secured three signings on the final day of the window: Jadon Sancho, Harvey Elliott and free agent Victor Lindelof. Lindelof arrives to provide cover at centre-back, whilst the two loanees arrive with the potential to add flair and depth to Unai Emery’s attacking options.
